Samsung produces two versions of the lens Samsung NX 45mm F1.8 – regular and 3D. This user-review is about the normal version. All pictures in the article are clickable. (and… my English is not ideal.. I know )

Samsung NX lens lineup is one of the most extensive in the world of mirrorless systems. In the first three years of NX, the company has focused on optics with fixed focal length, and got success. The list for now (beginning of 2013):

• 16/2.4
• 20/2.8
• 30/2
• 45/1.8
• 60/2.8macro
• 85/1/4

(It is primes only, except zooms, of course)

The new NX 45/1.8 takes a position between 30/2(pancake) and 60/2.8 macro lens. Angle of view -34,7°

45mm is very close to the classic 50mm, but keeps the logic of dimensions of the digital sensors. My feeling – 30mm pancake sometimes is too wide for walks, 50mm lenses from other manufacturers  – can be a little narrow, but when I got this 45mm on my camera, I understood – it is my. Honestly, I bought it without waiting for a tests in the internet, because I like this focal length.

In the box: Lens, Lens Hood, Case(imitation leather) and papers (warranty card, user manual, registration card etc).

The lens looks like a neat metal barrel with diameter of 62 mm and a length of 44.5 mm. Designed in the corporate style of Samsung NX. Has two controls – iFn button and switch between manual and automatic focus. Filter thread diameter – 43mm – a fairly common size, inherited from the film era, and often used on other lenses NX.

7 elements in 6 groups.

Weight – 115 g . Feels surprisingly light.

Lens hood – screw, plastic, looks robust. Has internal thread for filters (43mm).

Of course, metal hoods ED-LH30NB and ED-LH20NB can be installed also, but keep in mind that their light-protective effect will be worse than with the native hood.

Lens focuses quickly, quietly and confidently. AF Drive – step-engine (hybrid) . Traditionally for the system Samsung NX - absolutely precise auto-focus.

Aperture: 1.8 - 22. Consists of 9(!) petals with rounded shape. With this design, circles in bokeh is gorgeous not only with fully opened aperture, see here:

Bokeh is suitable for all conditions, even the most complex version of the background. Below – examples of how the lens handles branches and needles that lie outside the depth of field:

The objectives of this review does not include a comparison with other lens of the system, as well as research of sharpness/resolution (waiting for the tests on photozone.de). But I made few test images at different apertures to get information on how best to use the lens for different purposes. Hope, this can help:

Conclusion:

Congratulations to NX-owners - it`s looks like a third “gem” in the system. (previous two, I think – 30/2 and 85/1.4)

Samsung NX 45/1.8 can be safely recommended to all categories of users: it is general-purpose in the focal length, has a nice bokeh, outstanding sharpness and resolution. It is lightweight and quiet. Important – it is cheap. I think that it can catch up with the popularity of the famous NX 30/2.

• The Samsung NX1000 will be upgraded to an Android powered model using  tilting screen like the MV900 and a new EVF.

So, my comments: as you can see, it’s all pretty predictable - R-camera, which we expect to see at Photokina is delayed by six months. Android on the cameras for those who interested in the Internet more than in a photography. Necessary for any modern camera tilt-screen and EVF. And no mention of the new sensor or hybrid-AF system, or something else useful for photographers.

Really, what can photographers expect from a huge company that promised to conquer the camera market in 2013, and, at the same time, able to show at Photokina two lenses and one P&S camera? Of course, only the most advanced technology – tilt screens and the viewfinders. \sarcasm\

As you know, nxcsc.com – is a main and unique NX-system fun-site. I just collect the information in one place with the friends who participates in forum. I have nothing to do with Samsung, and my interest in the NX system is simple – I am only interested in the system for advanced amateur photographers. And I think the NX – was a right choice.

Today we all got a information from IFA 2012 about Samsung’s plans.

Asked if photographers can expect to see a larger sensor, such as an APS C-size, in future models, Samsung’s Digital Imaging Sales and Marketing vice-president SH Lim told journalists: ‘This is the first model – if there is demand we will expand.’

Lim also suggested that extending the Android system to Samsung NX compact system cameras would be a natural progression, but stressed that – for now at least – the company will focus on the success of its Galaxy compact.

Meanwhile, he confirmed that Samsung has no plans to launch any more NX cameras this year.

And it was said after the exciting announcements from other manufacturers! And after a whole year, we have seen only one innovation – WiFi! Do you understand? Advanced amateurs shoots in the RAW. And… WiFi on NX cameras does not work with RAW! (I mean backup option) No new lens, no accessories… Nothing for better shooting result, but Wi-Fi.

I will not more talk about it. I may be wrong. Just… Company must decide – a thousands of customers today, who shoot in the style “I’am and the tree”, or support of active amateurs as a base for millions advanced photographers tomorrow.

Maybe I’m too upset after the all last news. Still, I put a lot of effort for the nxcsc.com when I believed in the fact that NX has a great foreseeable future.
